Respiratory Protective Equipment, RPE, is a term that has been cropping up a lot lately which isn’t at all surprising due to the nature of the current global climate. In the changing tide of things, the team here at ASAP Semiconductor adapts to an altered world, which is why we are proud to be able to offer respiratory protective equipment now to our customers. For more information on respiratory protective equipment, read the article below.
So what constitutes respiratory protective equipment? Respiratory Protective Equipment is a type of Personal Protective Equipment, or PPE that is used to ensure the individual wearer against the inward breath of unsafe substances in the work environment air. It is best that respiratory protective equipment be used in occasions where there have been enough and sufficient control measures taken to ensure that the surrounding area is not contaminated.
At the end of the day, it is used if all else fails inside the chain of command of control measures, those being Elimination, Substitution, Engineering Controls, Administrative Controls, PPE.
Types of Respiratory Protective Equipment
1. Single Strap Masks
Though not certified as respirators by the NIOSH, many people will use the single strip mask as a type of simple guards against contaminants.. They are classified as a comfort mask because it is designed to be comfortable and disposable, though it is not designed to be fully protective.
2. Approved filtering Dust Masks
These types of masks are approved and certified by the NIOSH because they have been produced for blocking against particles, some mists and even some fumes depending on the type of approved dust mask. Along with these features, they are also disposable.
3. Half-face Masks
The half-face masks are built wiht a respirator cartridge filtering system. This system is intended for shielding the wearer from specific types of contaminants including but not limited to acid, gas fumes or other chemicals. Particulate media or cartridges can also be used with many of these masks to protect against various types of particles. Though there are some half-mask respirators that are disposable, the majority of them are made to be reusable and offering replaceable cartridges. One of the only downsides to these masks is that they usually require more maintenance.
4. Full-face masks
The entire face is protected from the contaminants. Filtering cartridges are generally used to protect the worker from acids, gas fumes or chemicals that are hazardous. The cartridge systems are often similar to half-mask respirators. These types of face-pieces require maintenance.
5. Powered Air Purifying Systems
The filtering system for these kinds of masks is worn by the wearer. The powered air purifying systems can blow out air that is filtered and pivot it into a helmet or hood system. Meanwhile the positive pressure can then blow it out of the openings below the face.
6. Self Contained Supplied Air
These systems supply air through tanks worn by the user. Commonly seen worn by firemen, these are designed to supply life saving air because the environment lacks the necessary air to breathe safely.
